What's the difference between a full session and a mini session?
Any tips or tricks to get good photos?
If we choose an in home session, how clean does it need to be?
My kids never cooperate, what can I do to get them to behave for photos?
What should we wear?
Do I have to order prints through you?
How long until we receive the photos?
What if it rains?
Full photo sessions last from 1 hour to 2 hours. I clear my calendar clear for a more than abundant amount of time, so no need to hurry. Newborn and Fresh 48 sessions are longer to leave time for diaper changes, nursing/feeding, etc.
Mini shoots last 30minutes (no exceptions). If you show up late to a mini, it will be even shorter as these are generally booked back to back. So very important to be on time for these!
During a full photoshoot things are usually more relaxed as I get to know your family more. We'll take a walk around an outdoor location, I'll watch a preferred family activity at home, and we interact a lot more. During this time the kids really get used to me and you'll see more "real" smiles.
Mini shoots consist mainly of posed photos at a set location, though I try to squeeze in as many candids as I can. These types of shoots can work well if you're looking for a few family photos, but in general they are less relaxed and not a full portrait of your life together as a family.
YES! Always remember that the camera can't tell if you're fake laughing or real laughing. So laugh! Smile!
During group photos, try to look at the camera, not at the kids (unless I ask you to look at the kids or it is a candid). And remember to smile, even if a child is acting up or frustrating you! Often, when I go through the group photos, it is the adult who is scowling :)
Generally a good idea to pick up excess clutter, but there's no need to hire a cleaning team or make your home spotless.
Signs of everyday life - toys, books, etc. - add character to the photos. In general, clear up clutter into a laundry basket and stash it in the laundry room or somewhere we are unlikely to spend time in. We will want to spend most time in one or two rooms with good light.
Here are some ideas:
-Let's make it a scavenger hunt shoot. Look for acorns, find big leaves, etc.
-Allow some toys in the photos. Ideally not a garishly red Elmo and preferably a neutral colored stuffed bear, but we have to pick our battles. And if your kid is attached to a certain toy now - we should capture that!
-I suggest you promise them something at the end - a sticker, a lollipop, a trip to a preferred park or ice cream shop. My 8 year old will do just about anything for screen time...
-Talk it up! Kids pick up on our vibes. If you present this as a play date with Katie and we'll play games, go here or there, and have fun. They'll have a very different outlook than if it is presented as possibly something stressful or negative.
Ideally wear what you like and, most importantly, what you feel comfortable in.
Avoid black on children - it overpowers them (though if you love it, we can work with it). Navy, however, works great.
Avoid neon anything. Avoid bright pink and reds- they don't photograph well and cause a cast/colored shadow onto faces. Avoid small stripes.
Try to have a unified color palette. This can be jewel tones or neutrals, for example, but not the whole family in neutrals and little Janey in bright purple.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO DRESS UP. Really. If you hate dresses, please don't wear one.
Consider our location when choosing footwear - heels may be uncomfortable if walking a bit to the location or while we are there.
No wide brimmed hats, no phones or keys in pockets (they will be visible), no sunglasses (ideally no transitions lenses unless it can't be avoided).
Not at all. I will warn however that some print labs (big box stores or drug stores especially) have terrible color reproductions. Prints through my lab are guaranteed or I will offer a full refund. I am also happy to take on the work of designing a Holiday card or special keepsake album for you.
My general turn around is two weeks.
Three options!
1. Reschedule (mini sessions are booked with a set rain date)
2. We take photos in the rain! Of course if the location is a dirt field or if its lightening this won't work.
3. Change location to indoors.
